I have taken up the resolution at last<lb/>
not to make the length of my neglect in not writing to<lb/>
you a plea, as is sometimes the case in matters of this<lb/>
sort for omitting that duty altogether. I thought to<lb/>
have had to congratulate you upon the acquisition of so<lb/>
agreable companion at Matlock as M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Lind, and<lb/>
intended to have taken that opportunity for a letter: but<lb/>
when the time came, he could not prevail upon himself<lb/>
to leave the scene of business at such a distance, while<lb/>
the fate of his friends the Dantzickers continued yet<lb/>
in suspense, little as the probability was become, of his<lb/>
being able to render them <del>of</del> any service.</p>
 
<p>On Saturday fortnight Sam came up from Chatham:<lb/>
we intended to have <sic>sat</sic> out on <add>the</add> Monday: but<lb/>
as I happened to have no sleep the night before, I did<lb/>
not think <del><gap/></del>it prudent to undertake an expedition<lb/>
so laborious as <del>I</del> we proposed our's should be under<lb/>
such a circumstance. The next morning however <add>[Tuesday]</add> we <sic>sat</sic><lb/>
out a little after 5 and got to Whitchurch between<lb/>
8 &amp; 9 after travelling 36 miles on foot, whereof</p>
