DUELING 1st Advantage + & 2d Advantage Preserves decorum. — prevent Assassination.

This A common-place argument against Duels
in the mouths of many is the example
of the Greeks & Romans: I entreat all such
persons to consider, that if they had not our duels,
we have not their assassinations.

NOTE

Thucydides + + who was in a manner an eye-witness of whatever he relates — [or Xenophon Quo] observes that in
a massacre which took place on the occasion of the troubles revolution which
took place broke out in the Athenian Government toward
the close of the Peloponnesian war great numbers
took that opportunity to avenge themselves
of their private enemies — As the Greeks Historians
take scarce any notice of matters relative
to the interior police, it is only by such an
accident as this where an event a matter of this kind
happens to be blended with a transaction of a
public nature, that we can obtain any information
indeed. In public party quarrels, every body one who is at all
conversant with Greecian history knows that they

allways fell to work in this manner. in the way of assassination

The attention of the public was not long ago
engaged by a challenge which passed on a
party quarrel between the Colleagues in
a certain Magistracy - this It has had, &
it is hoped will have no further consequences 5000 prisoners within 10 miles round about Rome - found in a few days -Publ. 1.p. 108 this was in the Golden age of the Republic.

And this misunderstanding happen'd in Ancient Greece
it would have been quickly scttled — The dagger
of one would have forced it's way to the Heart
of the other, & there [+] [+] (that is between those two) would have been an end.
