Has Mrs D. I wonder written to old Wise about the L5?
It is high time she should, if she has not.
I wrote on Tuesday in as plain terms as I could
write to Robin Phipps asking him whether the Bailiffs had
seized any & what things out of his house at any time & when before they seized
the things out of Dame Morgan's room. In answer to this came
a letter in the name of Peter & written by the Corporal letting me
once more when it was they seized the things at Morgans. So that
I am as much in the dark as ever. The Corporal is a worthy
creature, but wondrous stupid.
By Monday's Diligence I got a Catalogue from Polhill, which
ll the appearance of being a genuine one. By Thursdays
a letter from him with a bill explained now for the
in a manner tolerably satisfactory. The change is
nd to L12 4 — 0— He is to draw a Bill on me
for L12 and have the 4' together with the gratuity I promised
him for his trouble in sending the Catalogue till he goes
to Brompton which he talks of doing soon & calling on Mrs <unclear>Anworth.
I should think 1/2 a guinea in all may do. But if he grumbles
she may as well give him a guinea. We must have him
as an evidence. The cause cannot be tried in town: it must
be tried at the Assizes.
I have got a pair of buckles as heavy as two P
can carry. pence 1 -68 Item a pair of black & white stockings; at 14
longitudinally striped. Item a pair of do, do at 1d, do, do, of a patent
sort. They are I don't know how many Inches thick,, &
of a stitch drops, the whole is to go no further.
I am apt to think Polhill has not behaved dishonestly on the
whole.
Polhill mentioned a report there is at Battle that Mrs W. & c are
coming on the Parish. This I contradicted.
