counterfeit than written wordshandwriting for the purpose of authentication then must
of coursethe Principal Office must of course furnish
at least one written signature. Whoever
has this business principally in charge, accidents
or necessary indulgences may for a time remove
him from his post: as often as this happens
a an Under Clerk or Deputy definitely will be come to be employ'd, and the word Deputy
will be to be added to the words Offering Clerk. For this
of responsibility the name of Deputy employ'd should sign
his own name, not that of the Principal the name
signed by the Deputy, should be — not the name of
the Principal, but his own.

The Postmaster by
whom the note is supposed to be issued immediately
to the purchaser, being an additional person, his
signature affords an additional security against
forgery: and being a person whose handwriting is
known in the vicinity of his Office, it will,
in that vicinity at least, afford a better security than
the ham handwriting of an officer stationed in the
metropolis. It will moreover add to the number and
efficacy of the checks employ'd as securities for the
correctness of the accounts with of these sub-Offices
with the Principal Office.
