Monday Augt 30th 1779.

Hond Sir

At this present time I am at Sea I know not how far but
I hope not above 15 miles from Helvoetsluys. When I send you
this I shall be able to tell you of my arrival there.

I hope, Sir, you will not only excuse but take in good part my
having left England without informing you weither when or by what
means I intended to go. I thought it much better and indeed my
duty to save you if possible that fruitless anxiety which I think
you could not but have had while you were imagining that I was
exposed to the dangers of the sea which we always magnify by our
apprehensions.
