going into Germany.
[I believe I did not tell you that Sr Jos:h Yorke
gave me 2 political pamphlets lately published
They happened to become the subject of conversation
as lying on the table in his study when I was
with him in the morning. One is entitled "Memoire
justicatif de la conduite de la grande Bretagne
en arretant les navires étrangers et les munitions
de Guerre destinèes aux Insurgens de l'Amerique.
Londres: Imprimè par Harrison & Brook 1779 Quarto.
This is by a Sr James Marriot of whom Sr Jos:h
speaks in very high terms. He is judge ofI think
of the high court of Admiralty and is now publishing
his decisions with his reasons &c in dutch to serve as
Precedents. There are already several seperate ones publishd
but he means to collect them into a Volume.
The book of which I have just given you the title has
marginal contents and in other respects appears methodical
The language however is not his own. Sr Josh put it into
somebody's hands to correct as he is not perfectly Master of
french.
The other Sr Jos: calls a libel but says at
the same time that it is every word true. and
He insists much on the use or almost necessity of Libels
against Libels. Professes himself to have been th
of a yard full of them being written and says
King of Prussia that it is as necessary to
an enemy as to fight him out. This was an Apothegm
of that King's to him when they had been constantly together
for some time in the last war, was it not? But to return
to this Libel since a Libel it must be it is entitled
Memoire touchant l'importance et la necessitè
les Provinces-Unies fournis à l Angleterre
les secours stipules par les Traités. Utrecht. 1779
Fryday Morning
I did not get up till ½ past 7. I have
my hands and my head so full I dont know which way to
turnme. What I wrote last and more which I have to write
ought to be written to Lind rather than you. If I thought
Poere was in Town I would give him what I can remember
of the short account which Sr Josh read me from a letter of
Sr Willm Hamilton's of the late eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
Not a date of any single circumstance that I ever heard of
or that happened to me can I remember.
Munster was not at home he was at la Maison de la Ville
of which he is Secretary. As they told me he was going
out of Town I went to him there. I found him so busy
that I could not give him the letter but only asked him
when he should be at leisure. He was excedingly civil insisted upon
coming to me, which he did assoon as his business was over.
