<p>Not knowing when M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Rose would see me, or whether<lb/>
he ever meant to see me, the project moreover (to say nothing of<lb/>
the projector) being in the Road to the Ruin, my only resource was<lb/>
in Mr Long. I told him how matters stood &#x2014; he said he would<lb/>
see you about it, and appointed me tomorrow at 1/2 after 1, to<lb/>
hear the result. It became necessary for me to account to him<lb/>
for my having applied in the first instance to M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Rose. I told<lb/>
him consequently that it was by your direction, and that upon<lb/>
my asking how that happened, your answer was, that in your late<lb/>
office you were more in the habit of corresponding with M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi> Rose<lb/>
