Petersburg March 9th 1784

I have sent by this post to my brother a draught on a banker for 600
Rubles which according to the present bad course of exchange will amount
to barely an hundred pounds sterling. This money is (as I promised) to
defray the expences attending your coming out as far as Petersburgh,
and to buy such articles as it may be proper you should bring out
with you. A Salary of 600 rubles a year you will have as long
as you chose to stay with me and not being in the service of the
Empress you will dependant on nobody but me this I obtained from
Prince Potemkin knowing that you would not come on any other terms.
You can lodge & live with me free of any expence: you shall have
one or two servants to wait on you. I have just now engaged an
Englishman a journeyman watchmaker by trade who will work under you.

Any thing which you bring with you of your workmanship you may
most likely dispose of here to good account.

Your employment will be the assisting me in any machines
I may erect, any mechanical contrivance I may introduce, the
directing the making of models and the executing work parts
yourself as others under you cannot do. Contrivances in Shipbuilding
particularly small vessels & boats may also require your
assistance. You may have ground enough for Gardens if you
have time & inclination to attend to it.

There is abundance of fruit at the places where our employment
will lie.

Cloaths 2 suits are enough. Thin waistcoats & breeches most
wanting.
