There are two ways in which Happiness Pain
or Pleasures are produced. 1st By causes in which
man's action has no concern, these are i:e:+ +(for so they are generally called) natural
or which is the same expression, physical causes: 2 By causes in which
man's action has no concern: i:e: moral causes.

NOTE

I might mention indeed a 3d sort of causes
viz. supernatural - but this viz the
of the Deity performed [immediately] god by
means either of the man, or of the
things we see These we shall pass over as they [But as these] These we shall pass over - they are as much
above our knowledge as they are above the
notion of the two other sorts of causes that
are familiar to us [, we shall pass them over.]

[Tis] the latter sort [which] is that of the two on which
Laws can possess an influence: for it is on to
man only that man's Laws can be addressed.
If Happiness be in man the scope of every thought
and action, it is by the ideas of pain or pleasure
only that action can be prevented or produced; that

sketch shall be given of it hereafter for the
instruction of the reader: it will be more
instructive after that topics of observation
have been collected [I fixed] from a simpler
model.

When after he has collected such topics of observation such objects of comparison as a simpler model will more easily suggest.
