S.B. Kremenchuck to G. Walgrove — Copy <add. Extract</add>

You will have heard before this time of my
being appointed Lieut: Colonel in the Army
a favour which I am told has not been
confer'd before on either Foreigner or Native
who had not previously a military rank.
The regiment I am of is at Cherson where my
occupation will lead me from time to time, not
however so much on that account as I shall have
little to do with military concerns, The advantage
I enjoy from the being in the army (over
and above that of the degree of consideration
which it procures me) is the being dependent
on Prince Potemkin alone. It is now about
3 months since we set out from Petersburgh
of which the last fortnight has been spent in
this most charming peninsula which is
annex'd to the Russian Empire.

As the Prince has taken me for some time
past always in the same carriage with him
You may be sure the journey has been
highly agreeable. I believe he will leave
me by the way on his return to Petersburg
at a great Estate of his at White Russia
where I shall have some Shipbuilding business
which will be my chief Occupation till next
Spring.

In concluding this letter permit me
Dear Sir to remind you once more how
happy I should be to receive a few lines from
your hand and

S.B. Krementchuck to J.B. extracts

I have just rece'd news from Petersburg
of the arrival of men, women & children to the
amount of 139 from Scotland. the prince was
pleas'd to hear it and will t6ake good care of
them in the Crimea which it seems is the place
of their destination. A short time ago there
came a Ship load of ragamuffin Italians
which had been enticed from Leghorn by our
Agent who being paid by the Crown so much
pr Head, I suppose was not very scrupulous about
the kind of people or how he obtain'd them. some
of them rose, killed the Captain with intentions of
returning, but were caught & brought in first
I believe to Cherson then to Octair a port in the
Crimea, among them was an Englishman who
as soon as it was known that he was a Coalminer
was set to search for Coal in that Country. I found
the poor fellow almost naked & living on five
