would not in the instance of a Juryman answer
its purpose. In his instance it would host the interest
of probity more than it would serve. The use of probity would be more <add>rather be hurt by it than served. The effect and</add>
responsibility is to fix a man in a state of dependance
upon the public. Responsibility by the
evidence it affords strengthens his subjection to
the tribunal laws of that public whatever it be on
whose good opinion and favour he principally
depends. [+][+] Such is the effect, of it, and such where that effect is favourable to probity, is the use But the Judges public and that
of the Juryman are altogether different. The
Judge's public is the public at large. Its
interests and its affections are the interests and
affections of the whole body of the people. The
Jurymans public is composed of a few insignificant
individuals : whose interests and affections
may chance to coincide with those of the public
at large : but are altogether as likely to be stand diametrically
opposed opposite to them. The smaller the circle
in which any man moves , the move it wants if further it is from
coinciding with that which comprizes of the public at large. the Juryman's
circle is of the very smallest dimension, as
the Judge's is of the very largest. The Judge's circle public is
