Offer of Codification

9 Jany 1802

8
How Nepean
came to be deceived
by Long—Knowing
from J.B. of the
promise to Lord
Belgrave.
1. He thought well of
Long
2. He had not J.B's
experience.
3. He hopes to convert Long.

But Mr Nepean says your Lordship—
Mr Nepean who thus stood by you, how came
he to be thus deceived? Was it possible for him Did he not know from
you and from Mr Long's confession
or silence tantamount to confession—was did he
not know from every thing put together assured
of the promise to Lord Belgrave, and how
improbable it were incomprehensible the
number establishment of 500 prisoners or any establishment
at all was with the observation of that promise
Lord—it is not for me to say whether
he was or was not deceived: it was not for lay not in my
me my hear of it—Thus I know—and thus your
Lordship will agree with me in—that the sort of man
who and deceit is not the sort
of man to be prone who is forward to impute it to credit it.+ His is the
outset of this business I am sure, and for aught
I can say to the conclusion of it his penchant
affections—his most favourable were
all in the aide of Mr Long. He would have
imputed indolence—even incapacity—both in
the extreme any degree he would have supposed any
thing rather than that any spec on that moral
purity which gentlemen who have not had the
sad occasion that I have to put him all
that may for aught I know have always ascribed
to Mr Long. The exact words of what
he did say I will not say, not having his
express

+ His recollection memory had
presented him none
of those experiences
with which my sad
memory had furnished
me in such
fatal opressive
exuberance: had
I been guided
my motives been
in exact unison
with his suggestions
I should have fallen
not without redemption
into one of the
that Mr Long
had dug as your
Lordship may recollect
had dug for
me. I should have
said I can not
act but upon such
and such terms:
and the answer from
Mr Long would have
been Good to
you at once.
