Alarm [or Essay]
28 Novr 1801
Preliminary
I.
Wealth
1. Modifications
Sources of income
absolute & relative.
Absolute source
absolute
of income, what.
In regard to sources of income a another very material
distinction may be expressed convey'd by the adjunct/epithet term
absolute and relative: relation being had to
the individual by whom they are respectively
possessed.
By an absolute source of absolute encrease of income, I
mean every such source as is a source of
income not to the individual possessor only, but
to the whole community taken in the aggregate.
By a relative source of income I mean one
that is such to the individual alone to whom
income is afforded by it, without its adding any
thing to the income of the community at large.
All money which by the employment made
of it contributes pro tanto to the encrease of
the real value either in quantity or in quality
of the pre-existing mass of real capital,
and thereby in the real value in quantity or
quality of the growing mass of real income, all such money so long
as it is so employ'd, constitutes a source of absolute
income: it causes so much real capital, and
so much real income to exist more than would
have existed without it. To this head belongs
all money employ'd by the Agriculturer—the mariner—
the fisher—the manufacturer—and
the handicraft—and the artist—in the course
of their respective occupations.
