J.B. to Treasury

17 Jany

Letter II

With so discouraging a circumstance under my eyes communication before me
I wish rather than hope it were in my power to persuade myself
that this question by which the questions are bound
to nothing and in which the individual questions
beholds his fate hanging over his head had any
other object than the affording an occasion, or
to use the word which the nature of the case if separated
from the consideration of the persons would wait
for the pretence, for "relinquishing the once settled
plan called for this purpose by those whose steps they
are treading in"the project"+ altogether: nor on
any other supposition can find any use use or cause or use or motive
for the question about eventual remuneration
that immediately follows.

Under these circumstances, it can I
not but appear to me can not but think it does appear to me that
instead of giving answer to any such question,
and to save myself from the so burthensome and
ungenerous a task as it seeks to impose upon
me, I should not have been unwarranted in humbly
requesting to know as a preliminary whether
on the part of their Lordships there does really exist any
such disposition as that of enabling me to carry carrying the plan into
execution in any event and upon any terms.
Since if really no such distinction does exist, any such
task as that of setting down to make calculations for
which a long train of mercantile enquiries would be an
indispensable preliminary, would be a useless addition to
a train of sufferings which long ago were
in the estimation of those
otherwise occupied concerned at
the time in inflicting them—
when they had none not a quarter part of what they have since by much the utmost length that consist either with humanity or justice.
