me) I have received information that my Codification offer specially
directed to them has received acceptance at their hands, moreover
their present of a copy of their Journals has at length been received by
me as also in pursuance of their recent Resolution a continuation of those
Documents. In addressing to me their first letter which had for its object
the informing me that a complete copy which had been presented to them
of my works, without any address from me had been ordered to be translated
for public use, they had in the first place to give themselves a dispensation
from a general rule inhibiting them from making in their Journals
mention of any offerings made to them: & notwithstanding the existence of
serviles in that body which is what could not but have been expected I have
the satisfaction of having — partly from those authentic documents; partly
from chief functionaries of their's with whom I am in correspondence —
that in what has been done by them in my favor there has not been so much
as a dissentient voice.

Of the favorable point of view in which it has hitherto been my
good fortune to stand in their eyes one use which I have already endeavoured
to make, & I hope not altogether without success, is — the engaging
then to rid themselves of their Ultramar with a good grace rather than
a bad one. In this endeavor so far as regarded Spain, I had already
expended no ordinary quantity of labor time & paper. Of this paper
the most essential parts have already been received in Spain by the
hands of an intended translator & are I believe in a course of publication.
Of these a duplicate was about a fortnight ago sent to Lisbon. In its way
