Box 8 contains material relating to Bentham's thoughts on colonies and colonization, including 'Rid Yourself of Ultramaria', Bentham's letters to the Spanish people advising them to abandon their overseas colonies. The manuscripts also discuss Canada, and the 'Systematic Colonization' system of Edward Gibbon Wakefield.

The manuscripts are arranged as follows:

  • Folios 1 to 9 : Emancipation (Spanish), Preface [1818]
  • Folio 10 : Ipsedixitism [1818]
  • Folios 11 to 62 : Jeremy Bentham to Spain - Emancipate your colonies, Rid yourselves of Ultramaria [1820]
  • Folios 63 to 136: Rid yourselves of Ultramaria; being the advice of Jeremy Bentham, as given in a series of letters to the Spanish people [1821-22]
  • Folios 137 to 139 : Canada Petition [1827]
  • Folios 140 to 148 : House of Commons Canada Committee. EWllice's evidence [1828]
  • Folios 149 to 191 : Colonization Society Proposal [1831]
  • Folios 192 to 197 : Edward Gibbon Wakefield, on the Colonization Society's Plan [1831]
