its conjugates, as the logicians say, Utilitarian and Utilitarianism,<lb/>
has on this occasion amongst others attracted<lb/>
so much of public attent<hi rend="superscript">n</hi> and become an object of<lb/>
such importance that a short history of its adventures, so<lb/>
to speak, may perhaps be not altogether unacceptable<lb/>
to our readers.<lb/></p>


<p>The first work in wh<hi rend="superscript">h</hi> it ever made its appear<hi rend="superscript">ce</hi><lb/>
in the character of a subject of discuss<hi rend="superscript">n</hi> was the<lb/>
work entitled "Essays, by David Hume;" date of the first<lb/>
<del><gap/></del> <add>edit<hi rend="superscript">n</hi></add>, as far as recollection serves, the year 1742 or<lb/>
thereabouts. In that work it is spoken of as the name<lb/>
of a principle wh<hi rend="superscript">h</hi> might be considered as the foundation<lb/>
or corner-stone of one of the systems of morals at that<lb/>
time known and embraced by a philosophical <unclear>seit</unclear><lb/>
the <add>moral sense being the</add> denominat<hi rend="superscript">n</hi> <del>being</del> of a different system and that<lb/>
in truth a very widely different one. In that work<lb/>
of Dav. Hume's the idea attach<hi rend="superscript">d</hi> to it was altogether<lb/>
vague: the general idea not being followed up&amp;<lb/>
by the means of any particular ideas exhibited as<lb/>
representative of so many species contained in the<lb/>
genus so denominated liquidated as it were and<lb/>
applied to <add>practical</add> use.<lb/></p>

Not long before or after this time came out in<lb/>
French the then &amp; still so highly celebrated work of<lb/>
Helvetius entitled "<foreign>Sur l'esprit</foreign>". In this work a commencement<lb/>
was made of the application of the principle<lb/>
of utility to practical use:- to the direction<lb/>
of human conduct, in the ordinary course of life: a<lb/>
connection was <del><gap/></del> <add>formed</add> between the idea attached to y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi><lb/>
word happiness and again between the idea attached to<lb/>
y<hi rend="superscript">e</hi> word happiness &amp; the ideas respectively attached to<lb/>
the words pleasure &amp; pain. To several pleasures wh<hi rend="superscript">h</hi><lb/>
as yet had been without "a local habitation &amp; a name"<lb/>
both those appendages were now &amp; thus attributed: attached<lb/>
to the words utility &amp; principle of utility were now ideas in abundance-<lb/>
ideas which could not but be continually present &amp; familiar to the<lb/>
most inattentive, unobser<hi rend="superscript">t</hi> &amp; scantily-instructed minds.</p>

principle of utility, the significatn of the word utility with
its conjugates, as the logicians say, Utilitarian and Utilitarianism,
has on this occasion amongst others attracted

to our readers.
