INTRODUCT. DIMENSIONS of HAPPINESS.

common and equal concern for both which any
man in the such a station ought to feel for all, &
which every man does feel when they are towards all such perfect
as are strangers and when to all persons whenever he sets himself to
consider the effect upon of a Law upon men
as men, without suffering his thoughts to
fix on any particular individuals.

In short this addability of the happiness of
different subjects, is however when consider'd
rigorously it may appear fictitious, is a postulation
without the allowance of which all political rear
are at a stand: nor is it more fictitious than
the of that of the equality chances to reality
on which that whole branch of the Mathematics
which is called the doctrine of chances, is established

It is not rigorously true, that the chance of 1 to 2
for 20 guineas is equal to 5 , but it is true
that it is as nearer being equal to that sum

I know not whether
the effect of this note
on some readers
might not be rather
to perplex than
to satisfy, & whether
my anxiety to
put first principles
out of dispute, may not
have conjured
up objections
which will have
no body to own
them.
But an attack
will sometimes
be made at a
quarter the
least open, &
therefore the
least expected.
the few lines
following shall
therefore take their
chance. Those
who love not
allctaphysics
may pass them
Tis only to the extremely scrupulous they are written.
