<p>7. To say of any act &#x2014; from this, no pleasure, or no<lb/>
preponderant mass of pleasure, were the act exercised  by me<lb/>
or by this or that other person or number of persons, would<lb/>
be reaped by me or by them respectively, therefore, although<lb/>
from the correspondent <add>like</add> act, if exercised by you, <del><gap/></del><lb/>
<hi rend="underline">pure</hi> or preponderant pleasure would be reaped by you, the<lb/>
act is not fit or not proper to be exercised by you,<lb/>
is folly: and, if followed up  by acts having for their<lb/>
object the rendering <add>applying</add> evil in any shape to you, <del><gap/></del> injury <add>injustice</add><lb/>
and <del><gap/> <gap/></del> in so far as political <add>public</add> power or influence is<lb/>
employed in their design <add>to that end</add>, tyranny.</p>
 
<p>8 Abstraction made of future <add>contingent</add> consequences, viz. of<lb/>
consequences which with reference to the point of time<lb/>
in question, are as yet but future <add>contingent</add>, the <del><gap/></del> <add>mere</add> <add>bare</add> fact of<lb/>
a person's <del>contin</del> having <add>down</add> to that time continued in<lb/>
the <add>free as well as</add> habitual exercise of any act (<hi rend="underline">free</hi>, i.e. <add>viz</add> without<lb/>
or over and above <add>independently</add> of any disposition thereunto produced<lb/>
by the influence on them of pain or pleasure <add>in the shape of <del><gap/></del> punishment or reward</add> expected<lb/>
from any foreign <unclear>source</unclear>) is of itself conclusive proof, that<lb/>
the act is with relation to him productive either of<lb/>
pure or of preponderant good, and as such fit and proper<lb/>
to be exercised by him.</p>
 
<p>9. In relation to any act <del><gap/></del> which abstraction made<lb/>
of future <del>conting</del> <add>contingent</add> consequences is thus (as per par. 8.)<lb/>
fit and proper to be exercised by a man <add>person</add>, to warrant any<lb/>
other  person in <del>passing condemnation on its</del> <add>pronouncing it to be in any way</add> an<lb/>
evil one, it is incumbent on such censurer <add>censor</add> <del>not only</del><lb/>
to <sic>shew</sic> and render it preponderantly probable &#x2014; not only<lb/>
that in this or that determinate shape evil will be the result<lb/>
of it, but that the sum of that evil will <add>at the end of the <unclear>action</unclear></add> be preponderant over <note>the sum of the good<lb/>
produced by the same cause.</note></p>

7. To say of any act — from this, no pleasure, or no
preponderant mass of pleasure, were the act exercised by me
or by this or that other person or number of persons, would
be reaped by me or by them respectively, therefore, although
from the correspondent like act, if exercised by you,
pure or preponderant pleasure would be reaped by you, the
act is not fit or not proper to be exercised by you,
is folly: and, if followed up by acts having for their
object the rendering applying evil in any shape to you, injury injustice
and in so far as political public power or influence is
employed in their design to that end, tyranny.

8 Abstraction made of future contingent consequences, viz. of
consequences which with reference to the point of time
in question, are as yet but future contingent, the mere bare fact of
a person's contin having down to that time continued in
the free as well as habitual exercise of any act (free, i.e. viz without
or over and above independently of any disposition thereunto produced
by the influence on them of pain or pleasure in the shape of punishment or reward expected
from any foreign source) is of itself conclusive proof, that
the act is with relation to him productive either of
pure or of preponderant good, and as such fit and proper
to be exercised by him.

9. In relation to any act which abstraction made
of future conting contingent consequences is thus (as per par. 8.)
fit and proper to be exercised by a man person, to warrant any
other person in passing condemnation on its pronouncing it to be in any way an
evil one, it is incumbent on such censurer censor not only
to shew and render it preponderantly probable — not only
that in this or that determinate shape evil will be the result
of it, but that the sum of that evil will at the end of the action be preponderant over the sum of the good
produced by the same cause.
