different aspect
object minimization
of wrongs. Remedies
classed under 4 heads
by J. B. -- preventive,
suppressive, satisfactive,
& punitive.
So much for the civil, now for the penal, branch
of justice law. Here the rules by whh. in general terms indicatn.
is undertaken to be given of the subordinate ends in view.
In the arrangemts belongg to this branch of the field of
law a very different aspect, & do not suggest the
idea of any explicit correspondency. The penal brh.
of law havg. for peculiar end in view the minimisatn.
of the aggregate of wrongs & thereby, in so far of the sources of
unhappiness: such remedies as present themselves as furnished
by the nature of things as being capable of being applied with

or of the quantity of sensible evil proucable by them
have been by Mr. Bentham classed under four heads;
namely, the preventive, the suppressive, the satisfactive,
& the punitive or say subsequentially preventive;
the punitive in considern. of its effects on the feelgs.
of the alleged malefactor, to whm. applicn. is made
of it; the subsequentially-preventive in considern. had
of & reference made to the benefit expected to
be done to the community by keeping out of existence,
future contingent wrongs similar in their nature to
that on the occasn. of whh., similar to that in
consideratn. of whh. the manufacture in questn.
is purposely made to undergo the suffering thus create.
