Logic or Ethics | |||
Ch Object | |||
10 Virtue what | |||
From what is above, if to the word virtue how any may
intelligible meaning be annexed the following position observations corollaries
may in the way of corollaries be deduced
[That] The existence of virtue depends upon the
existence of pain and pleasure Virtue for its very existence
depends upon pain and pleasure
It is only in proportion as it is productive of
pleasure or preventive of pain is production of
pleasure that it is promotion of well-being, possessed
of any positive value, or entitled to any regard.
[That] its dependence on pleasure is altogether
as clear and necessary as its any dependence it has it has on pain
That in respect of what whatever tendency it has to
promote in any to any shape and to any amount pleasure it is of exactly the same value
and entitled to the same regard as in respect
of whatsoever equal in equally strong and efficient tendency it has to prevent avoid
a quantity of pain in any shape in to an amount
corresponding and equivalent equal in value to that such pleasure
[That whatsoever may as above be predicated
of Virtue, the <gap/> of it may with equal truth be
predicated of vice] | |||
Quere: <gap/> | |||
That as to vice, this too is and in the same
proportion as Virtue dependent for its very existence upon
pain and pleasure | |||
That it is only in proportion as it is productive of
pain or preventive of pleasure that it is promotive
of ill-being, or a felt object of aversion
That of this vice too the dependence on pain pleasure is altogether
as necessary as any dependence it has on pain.
