Besides Cotton and Opium, the Merchants send from the Malabar
Coast (exclusive of what goes from other parts of India) pepper
sandal wood, Ivory, Shark Fins, , Bezaar, Incencse, Pearl
Bar Gold, Gold and Silver coins, & a great variety of other articles annually,
in which the Company could not trade without great
loss, as the collection of most of these article require such a minute
as can only be paid by individuals who are early initiated
in the separate branches of it & who have gained by local
knowledge, an experience which none but those absolutely used
to the business can have. If the above plan took place, not only
all those exports would serve as remittances by our ships to
China, but also all the Tin, Gold dust, Wax , Pepper, and cargoes
of the Malay Traders & the Gentlemen both British and Foreigners
who did trade would endeavour to remit their fortunes in Gold and
SIlver by the way of China. Even a trial of this for a few years
would be very useful, if only yo ascertain the extent that the
trade might be capable of being brought to.
Although I have no doubt of the Company being able to
get more advantageous offers than what I can make of them, yet
that they may entertain no doubt of the practicability & utility
of the theory in this laid down, the following proposal is ready for
their Acceptance; and which though not on so great a scale in
all respects as above advised yet it is so fraught with great advantage
to the company that I hope it will at least have their
approbation & be attended with the good consequence hereafter
mentioned.
It is proposed that they send nothing to India for sale,
but give up the exclusive previlege of their ship to India (Captain
& Officers excepted as at present) & from India to China
