An act which in its earliest or <sic>it</sic> most obvious<lb/>
effects is beneficial may when the whole of its effects<lb/>
are taken together b<del>y</del><add>e</add> upon the balance pernicious. An<lb/>
act which in its earliest or most obvious effects is<lb/>
pernicious may upon the balance be beneficial. In<lb/>
either of these cases, an act or a judgment produced<lb/>
by a sympathy excited by the contemplation of the earliest<lb/>
or most obvious effects of the act first ment<hi rend="superscript">d</hi>.<lb/>
may be purely pernicious: and so in the case of<lb/>
an act or judgment produced by an antipathy excited<lb/>
by an act of the sort mentioned in the second place.<lb/>
In so far as by an assemblage of sympathies <del><gap/></del> or<lb/>
antipathies, or both <add>which as above</add> had become as above pernicious<lb/>
a judgment or dictate of the popular or<lb/>
