without vice in both shapes, what is to<lb/>
be done? Can man exist without anger?<lb/>
Without anger can injuries be averted, can<lb/>
self defence, can self preservation be<lb/>
provided for?</p>
<p>Answer. Certainly not without production<lb/>
of pain in the breast of the individual<lb/>
by whom injury has been inflicted. But<lb/>
to the production of this pain anger<lb/>
in not necessary. Anger is not necessary<lb/>
any more than on the part of a Surgeon<lb/>
by whom to save life a limb is amputated<lb/>
anger excited by view of the suffering of<lb/>
the patient and by contemplation of the still<lb/>
greater evil which without such amputation<lb/>
is about to have place is necessary. That<lb/>
anger never should have place is not possible;<lb/>
is not consistent with the  structure of<lb/>
the human mind. This however may be said<lb/>
and without exception that in every case<lb/>
the less there is of it, the better: for whatsoever<lb/>
of pain is necessary to the production of the<lb/>
useful <del><gap/></del> effect, will be much better<lb/>
measured out without the passion than<lb/>
by it.</p>
