<p>By <add>Private</add> Deontology private <add>considered as an art</add> understand the art of<lb/>
maximizing the <unclear>nett</unclear> amount of happiness in that<lb/>
part of the field of thought &amp; action which is left<lb/>
free by the power of law <del>of</del> &amp; government. To the words <hi rend="underline">proper</hi><lb/>
and <hi rend="underline">propriety</hi> by this definition the only <unclear>sense</unclear> which is either intelligible or useful is assigned.</p>
<p>Considered as a science, it is the science by<lb/>
which a man <hi rend="underline">knows</hi> how to exercise <add>to advantage</add> the art above<lb/>
defined.</p>
<p>On some occasions the happiness a man is able<lb/>
to procure for himself may be procured independently<lb/>
of any relation he bears to others. On <add>To</add> these occasions<lb/>
corresponds that branch of the art &amp; science which may<lb/>
be designated by the appellation of <hi rend="underline">"purely self-regarding<lb/>
"prudence"</hi>. On the other occasions a man's condition in respect<lb/>
of happiness is influenced by <del>influenced by</del> some<lb/>
relation that has place between himself &amp; others: to these occasions<lb/>
corresponds a branch of the art which may be designated<lb/>
by the appellation of <hi rend="underline">extra regarding prudence</hi>.</p>
<p>On these occasions a man's condition in respect<lb/>
of happiness is regarded by him either as influenced or as not<lb/>
influenced by the condition of others in respect of happiness.<lb/>
In so far as a man's condition in respect of happiness is<lb/>
regarded by him as being improved by the condition of others<lb/>
in respect of happiness, it is regarded by him as being improved<lb/>
by &amp; in proportion to their happiness or by &amp; in proportion to<lb/>
their happiness. In the first case the branch of the art in<lb/>
question may be designated by the appellation of <hi rend="underline">effective benevolence</hi>: in<lb/>

Deontology — Private Beginning

By Private Deontology private considered as an art understand the art of
maximizing the nett amount of happiness in that
part of the field of thought & action which is left
free by the power of law of & government. To the words proper
and propriety by this definition the only sense which is either intelligible or useful is assigned.

Considered as a science, it is the science by
which a man knows how to exercise to advantage the art above
defined.

On some occasions the happiness a man is able
to procure for himself may be procured independently
of any relation he bears to others. On To these occasions
corresponds that branch of the art & science which may
be designated by the appellation of "purely self-regarding
"prudence"
. On the other occasions a man's condition in respect
of happiness is influenced by influenced by some
relation that has place between himself & others: to these occasions
corresponds a branch of the art which may be designated
by the appellation of extra regarding prudence.

On these occasions a man's condition in respect
of happiness is regarded by him either as influenced or as not
influenced by the condition of others in respect of happiness.
In so far as a man's condition in respect of happiness is
regarded by him as being improved by the condition of others
in respect of happiness, it is regarded by him as being improved
by & in proportion to their happiness or by & in proportion to
their happiness. In the first case the branch of the art in
question may be designated by the appellation of effective benevolence: in
