<p>Sympathy to the amt. the whole one of <gap/> buys &#x2014; not <gap/><lb/>
and a source of pleasure: is amount of the <gap/> of <unclear>knowing</unclear> <gap/> for<lb/>
suffering. This is the perfection of moral virtue: add intellectual <gap/><lb/>
pleasing itself in<lb/>

<p>Perhaps there never existed any human being who<lb/>
had reached full age without having <add>ever</add> experienced the<lb/>
sense of sympathy: of pleasure at the perception or idea<lb/>
of anothers pleasure &#x2014; of <del><gap/></del> uneasiness <add>pain</add> at the perception<lb/>
or idea of anothers suffering. In early years at<lb/>
least <add>at any rate</add> such a sense must have <unclear>passed</unclear> out: howsoever<lb/>
afterwards extinguished</p>
 
<p>In a civilised state of society; so secure to be<lb/>
to no inconsiderable extent <unclear>imfused</unclear> within the circle of the<lb/>
family of which the individual forms a part: that family<lb/>
being as it were in a state of <gap/> with all others: or<lb/>
at any rate to the purpose of <unclear>depredation</unclear></p>
 
<p>In other instances it <gap/> itself to the member<lb/>
of the same class whatsoever be the <unclear>principle</unclear> of unity in<lb/>
the class: to persons of the same neighbourhood, harbouring<lb/>
the same opinions, the <gap/> <gap/>. One might even<lb/>
<gap/> the same <add>self-regarding</add> interests: for <del><gap/></del> <unclear>commonness</unclear> of interest<lb/>
though it be but self-regarding interest is a source of<lb/>
