In 1749 Hartley published the first edition of his work on
Man. In it he gave the true meaning of happiness by showing that
it was composed of those elements which the different pleasures furnished
He translated, so to speak, the language of felicity into the language of
pain & pleasure. He made out a list of pleasures & a parallel list
of pains — but saw not the bearing of the whole on the greatest
happiness principle — nor referred to it under that name, — nor under
the name of utility, — nor under under any other name as the
all-directing guide in the walk of public & private life.
He advanced beyond his forerunners, — & then stopped short —
in sight of the shore, — upon which he never landed —
This work of Hartley's Dr Priestley popularised to a certain extent in an after
edition from which he expunged what was then denominated
in the quaint phraseology of the day once in vogue was called the "quisquilious
matter
