Self-tormenting-Mutilation &c.

There are no scarce any sorts of bodily pains which some
person or other out of mistaken piety has not inflicted
on himself; & there are no sorts of bodily
pains and uneasinesses which a person from the same
motive is not liable to commit. When any one
is so weak as to think that the tormenting himself
or any other any more than sensible correction is the way to recommend
himself to the favour of an all-benevolent being God there is no help for it: his own folly will
be but too severe a punishment.

There are some kinds of disablement and
mutilation which men have subjected been known to subject themselves
to [to inflict on themselves] through idleness for the sake of avoiding
the being subjected to particular kinds of work to which they
are particularly averse; or in general the to save themselves from being
made to do any kind of work: others who or through
idleness and true cowardice together to save themselves
from serving in the wars. The effect of an offence
of the former kind is to diminish the public peace;
wealth: of the latter to diminish the public force.
