As little will he hesitate in pronouncing the man of
Ao 1800 to be superior in wisdom to the man
of 1500.

Why? — because while to what they such of the
materials and sources of wisdom (viz. facts) as have
respectively come under the cognizance of their own senses they
are exactly upon the a par: while in respect of such
of those materials and sources of wisdom as are derived
from the reports of others, the latest liver of the two
has the possesses an indisputable advantage.

This advantage depends it is seen upon the
existence of a line of conv communication
as between in the shape of written [documentary discourse
evidence] or at least of oral discourse as between age
and age. But such is the supposition upon which
the fallacy in question is grounded: for whatsoever more wise
or less wise be the character to be ascribed to them, the opinions
of our ancestors forerunners are by the supposition argument supposed
to be accessible to us known or at least cognizible to us.
