times little or nothing.<lb/>
From their <hi rend="underline">folly</hi> more<lb/>
(viz in the way of<lb/>
<hi rend="underline">warning</hi>) is to be<lb/>
learnt than from<lb/>
their <hi rend="underline">wisdom</hi>: yet<lb/>
it is to their wisdom<lb/>
alone that the<lb/>
sophism <unclear>sends</unclear><lb/>
us.</note>
<p>What then? in these our times is there nothing to<lb/>
be learnt in former times? no instruction to be gained<lb/>
from them</p>
<p>Oh yes much to <del>teach</del> learn: few <add>not many</add> cases in which<lb/>
<add>more or less</add> <add>directly or indirectly</add> there <del>may</del> not be more or less.</p>
<p>But the materials from whence <add>capable of serving to us <del><gap/></del> as</add> instruction<lb/>
sources of useful instruction are &#x2014; not opinions but<lb/>
<hi rend="underline">facts</hi> <add>matters of fact</add>: and the instructiveness of their facts is altogether<lb/>
independent of the wisdom of their opinions.<lb/>
As to opinions it is much <add>rather</add> more from such as have <add>were</add><lb/>
been foolish than from such as were wise that what <add>such</add><lb/>
instruction we may be in a condition to draw from them<lb/>
will have been derived. From foolish opinion <add>judgment</add> comes<lb/>
foolish conduct: and from the most foolish conduct, the<lb/>
severest disaster, and from the severest disaster the most<lb/>
<add>impressive as well as</add> useful warning.</p>
