Between 100 and 5 & 40 40 and 45 years ago I was acquainted
with a Ship Builder in London
whose business consisted more in repairing
than building Ships. This gave him occasion
to note the different numbers of men employed
in Merchant Ships of the different
Nations, on Ships of the same size, shape &
burden. He gave me a scale of the different
Nations. In In a Ship on which,
when manned by Englishmen, I forget whether
15 or no more than 13 hands were employed,
when manned by Spaniards 5 and 40 for an 45 hands
were employed. These were the extremeties
fo the scale. At present the United States
men surpass the English in Ship building.
My Brother, had he remained in Office
would as surely have made England
surpass them. The account given
