1823. 30.
Mr. James Bevans to J B. Sharpe Esq-Buenos Ayres
secured by Iron Bars on the outside, even if in a
Court Yard Although at first sight to an Englishman
they have a prison like appearance, yet I
was very quickly reconciled to them, and now I
would not be without them on any account: the
Children can play about the windows (which are
generally near the floor) without any fear of their
falling out. The elevatons of the Principal Houses
are in the Moorish stile of Architecture; and from
the boldness of the projections, and the open work Parapess,
they have rather a grand effect. The prints in
Ackerman account of Buenos Ayres are generally, as
far as I have had an opportunity of seeing, faithful
representations. As I expected, none of the wells of
this Country go below the Landsprings: some of them
are rather brackish, some very fair. But I am
now trying to sink a well through the bed of clay
beneath the Land spring. I have a large well which
belonged to a Monastery, (the Recoleta), which is
suppressed, allothed for me to try the experiment with;
the water in it is only fine feet deep, and I have boned,
with some slight boring tools which I found here,
15 feet, and find a whitish kind of clay.

31.st Jan.r. The Government has sent to England
for two sets of Boring Apparatus, which I hope will
prove very useful: thy description of the soil was
very far from connnect: there is a very great diversity
in the soil: in some places there is sand
and no brich earth, in other places there is mould
over brick Earth, but the Tosca is a very different
article to the one show to me in London-
