Objector — Outs
having an interest
in exposing, as
Ins in
fallacies, have
come so many
to remain thus
long unexposed?
But (it may be observed) if, which in the
position of the Ins, it is the interest of public men
to defend abuses and imperfections, and for that
purpose purpose, to make use of whatsoever weapons in the shape of fallacies or in any other shape are
to be found within their reach, no sooner are they in the position of the
Outs than this interest is at an end. This change
having taken place, they have not only parted with
that interest, they have acquired an the opposite one.
It was then their interest to employ those these fallacies —
it is now not only not their interest to employ
them, it is their interest to detect and expose them.
And considering the vast length of time during which
this salutary interest has been in operation how comes it
(it may be asked) that the task of exposing them
and rendering them untenable remains in any
part still unperformed?
