My Dear Sir
This Day and not before the small package containing
Mr Bentham's Book, which had been left for me at Lambeth Palace
was brought to me at this place by Mr Peter Burrell.—
I have the honour to acknowledge it, & also your obliging Letter
of the 23rd. I am quite sorry not to have known sooner that this
work could be purchased at Payne's; I ought not to have given to you
the trouble of seeking it for me:— At the same time however I am
flattered by your recollection of an old Associate in this Vineyard of
Penitentiary Police, in which we labour'd without attaining our Object,
tho' not unprofitably, for I have long been convinced that our
earnestness in the business contributed to awaken the humanity
and Attention of others, & that much good in the penal system is
gradually working itself into effect.— The urging of a right idea
in the world, tho it may miss its immediate aim, is often like
Cicero's description of true Glory, "radices agit, atque etiam propagatur
