3 Whig fallacy fallacy the third. Not measures but man!
alias Not man but measures.

Of the two substantives which comes first, depends
upon the verb

In vote, in speech or writing Give your support not to measures but to man

In vote, in speech or writing support combat not the man,
whatsoever be their measures

The maxim is adage may amount to any thing or nothing. It is therefore
and thereby so much the better suited to the purpose
of the invention or inventions

Loyola if the in respect of fraud and versatility
his principles were those by which in a succeeding age gave
celebrity to his disciples, Loyola might have regarded
with an eye of envy the author of this adage. The merit credit
of it seems to be commonly attributed given to Charles Fox.

Of the words of it his Whig successors seem pretty
well ashamed: there exists not among them in these degenerate days there exists not in the party any man
whose reputation is capable of standing the shocks provoked
by such an object. as well, during a thunderstorm might an eight and forty
pounder mounted on the roof own and by an iron rod terminating in communicating with the dinner table
to set up at Brookes's. But the substance of it,
without the note appellative, wrapped up in a cloud of words,
has of late been seen peeping out, if I am rightly
informed, in [one of the periodicals,] in a periodical; one which
I have never as yet looked at.
