Great use of equivalences
— a definition, an indication
of equivalence —
a paraphrasis — &c.
An eminently useful instrument of information is
this same indication of equivalence. In logic a definition
is but an indication of equivalence — the ratio relation of equivalence
as having place between the import of the one word defined and the phrase
by which it is defined: a paraphrasis is but an indication
of the relation of equivalence as having place between the one
and the other of two phrases, each consisting of which consists
of words or number in number to an indefinite amount more
than one.

hand.
In the art of writing the equivalence has place
between letters and certain combinations of letters on the one
part with the in ordinary writing and the characters
employed in the species of writing called short-hand
writing: object or say purpose in this case giving permanent existence
to the visible characters written the same time as those in
which the fugitive existence is given to the audible signs
— which they are employed to impress upon minds in any
