6. From this misnomer not unimportant are the produced ills
consequences that may be seen to

A sort of transcendent and mysterious excellence is
ascribed attributed to it: a something distinct from and superior to it: a
something which enables it to in the order of consideration and
admiration places it conveys the idea of its being possessed of
a value distinct from and superior to that which belongs to any
particle of matter — everything that the object subject matter of perception
to any one of our five senses

7 One practical consequence is — that to an inconsiderable extent
persons in an inconsiderable number in the character of scholars instruction
is given in relation to it for its own sake, and without
any application made of it to any other branch of art and science:
in other words without proceeding to mixt mathematics
in any of its ulterior branches whereas, as will be seen in another place the truth is that unless
application be made of it, it is altogether useless: and the whatsoever
time and labour is bestowed upon it, is so much time and labour
thrown away
