Upon the young Countess's hearing of my the Empress's having
accepted my offer of service she began to urge that in my
favour with her mother; but the only answer she got was
that if I was God Almighty she would never consent
to my having her daughter and that should she die
she would in her will not only disinherit her
but curse her if she should marry me.
Notwithstanding the violence of such expressions the question
is that the mother would be easily brought to consent
if the daughter persists; but the aunt who does
not curse promises to be incurable. There seems
therefore no hope for me unless she would elope
and she her timidity will never permit her to
do that except she should be very much confined,
and ill used.
When she has been at the window
and I passing by a maid servant set to watch her
threatened to tell her mother directly if she did
not come further from the window and She at
the age of 27 or 28 submits to such a guard.
