Thus it is that Under the system devised and maintained by
English lawyers, in addition to the burthen necessarily
attached to the condition of Jurymen, comes
not frequently this factitious and useless profane trade: and this
with a degree of frequency and severity proportiond
to the regard sensibility of felt by the personsindividuals in question for by the force of religious
and moral obligations.
Toward the people of Scotland under the To the lawyers To the Scottish should it happen to be as
of perjury forcing as to the English lawyers, and to the
people of Scotland under the guidance of such lawyers
to bl submitt: to defile themselves with that admiration as quickly as with as much tranquillity and unconcern the people of England, this
part of the burthen attached to Jury service the power of the Jury box
will cross the Tweed with the rest.
But if in Scotland there be among the lawyers Judges
the same fondness for that abomination, and among the
people the same indifference acquiescence under it as in England,
such depravity will in Scotland be still more destitute
of cause. Then in England more have the old old established
and new preventing plan a A with its usual concomitant graces wisdom of ancestors, danger of innovation, and their to urge — we are used right or wrong
to it: and in Scotland in behalf of the enormity
at least, as such plea can be urged is pleadable.
