Critchoff Decr 29th OS 1784.
Diamonds for cutting glass. Send me by Notman or by the first
opportunity six of them if they do not cost more than a guinea
a piece, three of them at least let them cost what they will.
But if there is more than 4 or 5 shillings difference in the price of the
diamond alone and the cost when set in the handle; in that case
send only one of them set for we can set the others ourselves.
The one I brought with me from England I had new set today in
a larger handle as the ivory one in which I had it did not suit
the great fist of our glass cutters. I think I remember a Glazier's
telling me his diamond cost 15 shillings.
The Glaziers have another instrument for cutt breaking off little pieces which
remain without the line marked by the diamond. It is a piece of iron with
a notch in it large enough to take hold of the thickness of the glass. I dont
know but this makes a part of their hammer. Send me one of these.
The Empress's journey this wayward to the Crim next summer is put off.
I shall therefore be probably more at leizure, or at least be occupied
in a manner which will admit of my being more with you when
you come.
I received y two days ago a letter from Notman
dated Decr 11th at Riga by which I learn that he was setting out
to continue his journey by way of Konigsberg. You will therefore
of have seen him before you receive this but I hope he will not yet
be have left you on account of the Diamonds mentioned above which
