The account you were so kind to give me of my Brother's
Progress in his Journey was later than any I had
received from himself, his last Letter to me was from
Dieppe, but, upon recollection, I should have mentioned
one I received from him about 3 weeks ago from
Constantinople dated Novr. 25th: This Letter was very
Short, and he was not then determined whether
to procede by Land or water; according however
to his Calculation he must be before this time
at Cherson, and not impossible I may find him,
already at Critchoff at my return.

I have been unavoidably detained here three
weeks instead of three days, the time I expected
to do my business in.

In my way I called on Prince Dashkoff,
whose Regiment is quartered at Vitepsk a
Commercial Town situated on the Dwina, and
he accompanied me here. It may appear somewhat
extraordinary for a Person to take a Trip of
500d Versts, & the same back again, and That
on an hour or two's Notice merely to have a
little Chat with a Friend: but here Ideas of
distance make such slight sensations that
This was thought little of; He could not
however stay so long as I, so that I was
obliged to let him return without me.

This Autumn I was so fortunate as to have
Visits from Four of my particular Friends
