Of Punishments

which are will be the consequence if the excessive punishment
in question if it be too severe : shall cast
in the sufferings of the innocent which will be
the consequence if it be too mild to be
that any antipathy or indignation I may have
at the thoughts of an offence
has never been an inducement with me to
add a single grain to the punishment of the offender :
that any errors I may have fallen into on this
occasion are the result of an unavoidable
want of judgement, and by no means of levity
in want of can : and that as to any
such motive as that of general malice against
human kind, as it is not to be found in
human nature, it probably is not to be found in
mine.

After all I would wish him to understand that
there is no subject whatever on which I get
by my opinion then that from a
question : that it have been more necessity in
many cases instances that has dictated the choice
which I have made : of a punishment for the
case in hand because the punishment must <add> forced to come to a determination
be proposed I have prescribed such or used
a punishment, because though I know of many that appeared to be as good, I know
