Forfeiture of Reputation.

A ſixth expedience is by transferring or at least endeavouring to transfer upon one offence the measure of disrepute that naturally attends upon another. The way in which this is done is by affecting to regard the obnoxious offence practice in question as an evidence of another practice what which men are already in the habit of bestowing a superior degree of disrepute.(a) It is plain that the cases in which this can be attempted with any prospect of succeſs must
