PROPOSAL
FOR THE DISCLOSING OF A
NEW and PECULIAR PROCESS,
AND MAKING OVER A
COMPLETE APPARATUS
FOR MANUFACTURING THE
ETHEREAL MATCHES,
OTHERWISE CALLED
PHOSPHORIC TAPERS,
Whereby the DEMAND for that USEFUL and FASHIONABLE ARTICLE may be GREATLY
ENCREASED, as well as the TRADE thereof EFFECTUALLY ENGROSSED.
Drawn up by J.y Bentham for Logan Henderson. 1785
THE Advertiser is the same person who, under the name of GAY,* has for some time been in
possession of supplying the Trade with the only MATCHES of this sort that can be depended
upon. He had just brought the manufacture of them to its present state of perfection, when his appointment
to a genteel and profitable station, incompatible with his continuance in this business, determined
him to make the following proposal to any persons who may be inclined to purchase it:
THE utility of the ETHEREAL MATCHES is too obvious to need much to be said in proof of it.
For producing light at the instant it is wanted, and only when it is wanted, they are, when well
manufactured, the best, or rather the only implements that have ever been discovered. Flint, Steel,
Brimstone-Matches, and Tinder, form an apparatus which is uncertain in the effect, cumbersome in
the carriage, and tedious and troublesome in the use. To produce fire with them, so as to light a
candle, requires not only some degree of practice, but a certain degree of strength, and an effort of
the hands and lungs, which persons are most liable to be unfit for, at times when a light is most
wanted; for instance, sickness in the night, or sudden alarm of any kind. Tinder, when damp to
the degree in which it is frequently found to be, in the ordinary state of the atmosphere, takes fire
with difficulty, or not at all; and, as the occasions on which it is wanted for such purposes are uncertain,
and commonly unlooked for, the trouble of giving a constant attendance, to see that it is in
a proper order, is more than people in general, particularly servants, are disposed to take. This
process is likewise a dirty, and, to persons whose lungs are out of order, an uneasy and unwholesome
one. In GAY's Ethereal Matches, not the least particle of brimstone is employed.
KEEPING Rush-Lights or Lamps constantly burning, is an expensive practice, and to many a disagreeable
one; for, though there are some who may feel the want of a light, after they have been
accustomed to it, there are others whom it prevents from sleeping, or otherwise incommodes.
To persons of tender eyes, candle-light, thus incessantly applied, and striking upon the eye, in a
peculiarly tender part, which a recumbent posture exposes to the impression, is always pernicious, and
to many too painful to be endured. THE
* A NAME assumed only for the sake of its shortness, that it might take up the less room when applied to the TUBES.
