On the principle
of asceticism

In, &c I have been speaking all along of course with reference
to the standard of utility. If there be a principle
upon which it can be according to the dictates which can dictate
or can seem to dictate the taking of this course
it can only be the principle of asceticism. In considering
the dictates of the latter principle on
this head we must lay aside out of the question all those modes
of conduct against which it acts in alliance conjunction with
the principle of utility. I mean those modes of
conduct which being noxious mischievous in a superior degree to other
persons are reprobated notwithstanding their being
beneficial in the first instance to the guilty agent
himself, by the principle of utility, and for that
very reason by the principle of asceticism. All
All that come into view on the present occasion
are those which being upon the whole pleasurable unless in particular
circumstances to the party himself, and unless
by accident in particular circumstances not mischievous to others
are on that account less free by the principle
of utility, and on that same account proscribed
by the other principle.
