NOMENCLATURE FELONY. How retainable.

1

It may be urged against the abolition of the Term
Felony that the idea of infamy it impresses
in the minds of the people on the crime to
which it is implied is serviceable & salutory
They are alarmed & their abhorrence in a stronger
degree excited by that odious appellationsound, than
even it might be at the more particular ones
Thief Ravisher Robber &c of which as
their common genus it is predicable.

If this should be thought true, it may be still
retained, after being purged of all its dark &
unfathomable consequences; in short after being
made no longer designation of a certain punishment
as according to it's Technical Idea, but of a
certain class of crimes, as according to its popular.
