<p>"We rejoice to find from the Dublin Paper received yesterday,<lb/> | |||
"that all attempt to encourage Radical Reform Meetings<lb/> | |||
"have failed in Ireland. The lower classes in that Country are<lb/> | |||
obliged to work for their bread, and have no poor rates to subsist<lb/> | |||
on; they, therefore, have not time to devote to meetings<lb/> | |||
of this description; besides, the Elective franchise is much<lb/> | |||
more extensive in Ireland than in England. Leases for lives<lb/> | |||
are the general made of tenure, and thus there is scarcely<lb/> | |||
a Tenant with a house over his head who does not rank as<lb/> | |||
a forty shilling freeholder. The people of Ireland may be therefore<lb/> | |||
considered as almost exercising the right of universal suffrage in<lb/> | |||
their present civil and political state. It has been finally resolved<lb/> | |||
by Government not to call out the militia in Ireland<lb/> | |||
