24 April 1813
Panopt. Compensation Claim 1. Capital expended
(6) Deficit all claimable
Dissipation none
Be this as it may £12,000 a more or less in the least
sense that can with truth be set down as the amount of loss
out of pocket upon the joint concerns the viz the original system of mechanical
inventions merged as it was became afterwards
and destroyed by my the transaction with government. But
for these combined misfortunes I should have all the
estates sold as above would have been remaining in my
hands: and to the £500 a year money of that time
viz 1792 would of course have corresponded a much
larger nominal sum, "money of this time.
That of the expenditure made as above, no part
could with propriety be set down to the any such account as that of prodigality —
will would in so far as a negative can be certified
be certified in my belief upon enquiry by all to whom
every one of my few surviving acquaintances to whom I my
character and habits of life wer have ever at the respective times been known
At no time except as above has it ever happened to me
to exceed any more than to add to my income. Till the my father's death which happened in the 44th year of my age £100 a year
exclusive of chamber rent counted of it did not exceed
my expenditure. nor had I ever yet known what it is to be in debt To a man to whom £100 a year
has been sufficient, £700 or 800a year (for in addition
to the £500 a year sold I retained all along a few hundreds
which either could not have been sold at all or not without too
great a loss) £700 or £800 year clear of incumbrance
could scarce have been felt to any such degree insufficient as
to launch him into a course of expenditure beyond his
means.
