<p>New York Papers arrived this morning to the 21st<lb/> | |||
Feb. from which the following are extracts:—</p> | |||
<p>[From the Port au Prince Telegraph of the 16th <gap/>.]</p> | |||
<p>Interesting from St Domingo.—It appears that Commodore<lb/> | |||
Aury with a flotilla of small armed vessels, under a foreign<lb/> | |||
flag wished to make an attack on several parts of the north-eastern<lb/> | |||
coast, in order to induce the inhabitants to shake off<lb/> | |||
the Spanish yoke, & declare themselves independent, they at<lb/> | |||
first approved of his propositions made in the name of the<lb/> | |||
president of Hayti, but having discovered, it was his intention<lb/> | |||
to establish a separate Government, they rejected them<lb/> | |||
& sent an address to Boyer, in which they declared their<lb/> | |||
intention to place themselves under the protecting laws of<lb/> | |||
the State, Whereupon Boyer sent a mission composed of<lb/> | |||
3 officers of the army, to D. Paschal, Governor of the city<lb/> | |||
of St Domingo.— On their arrival they found the Governor<lb/> | |||
had been shipped off & the Colombian flag hoisted<lb/> | |||
& a Provisional Junta formed; the mission then returned<lb/> | |||
to Port au Prince with dispatches from <unclear>Jose Nunez de</unclear><lb/> | |||
<unclear>Caceres</unclear> who had been appointed by the Junta President<lb/> | |||
& Political Governor. Boyer made a suitable reply to<lb/> | |||
