And what will the Legislature be about all this
while? It will be conniving, for ever, at this confirmed
habit of disobedience on the part of these
their subordinates. And of this connivance, what
will have been the cause? What, but community
of sinister interest between these same learned
contemners and rebels, and those that majority
of the members of both Houses, whose conduct is
determined by their influence. now this same corrupt
connivance has been observed to be habitual, and
charged as one of the manifestations of the universal
corruptedness, of which matchless constitution is the
efficient cause, and the universal corruption, its
necessary effect. But who in the form not merely
of a confession, but a spontaneous assertion, wd
have expected such an admission on the part of
a learned gentleman, high in favour with the head
of the Law, and with expectant eyes, looking at high
office. Has not a pass here been let out of a
learned boy? -
